ANSWERS

What is an Original Print?
Unlike a painter who paints directly on to paper or canvas a printmaker works first on a surface such as metal, stone or a fine screen mesh from which multiple images can be printed. There are a number of technically distinct media which come under the umbrella of printmaking eg. etching, lithography, silkscreen, linocut etc. Each media has its own distinct visual charachteristics offering the buyer a range of very diverse art works to choose from. The creation of a print is often extremely complex, if the artist decides to edition an image 15 times then the entire technical process must be repeated from beginning to end 15 times. Therefore although an edition may comprise 15 prints of the same image, each print is unique in itself. The artist will have put as much time and technical expertise into the 15th print as he/she did into the first.
